Title: A Method of Colouring Titanium or Titanium Alloy
Description: A method is described whereby titanium or titanium alloys are coloured in different colours. A processing chamber, such as a quartz tube 1, may be used which is sealed with two gate valves 2,3. The work pieces are arranged in the processing chamber on a sample holder 4. A vacuum is then applied to the chamber 1. Oxygen is then passed into the processing chamber and a magnetic field applied. The method utilises an oscillating magnetic field in a low pressure oxygen-containing atmosphere to initiate titanium oxidation. The oxide layer so produced is thick enough to obtain chosen colour through interferometric effects. Colours range from yellow with the thinnest oxide layer, through to purple, blue, gold, violet, green to grey. No deposition of coatings or anodic oxidation occurs. This can be used for various applications, including: decorative purposes, labelling, protecting the surfaces made of titanium or titanium alloys, and increasing the biocompatibility.
