We invite the visitors to gather at each full hour (at 9:00am, 10:00am, 11:00am, 12:00pm (noon) and 1:00pm) by the doorman at JSI’s main entrance and choose one or more visit programmes in the duration of one hour (60 minutes).

Every hour (9.00, 10.00, 11.00, 12.00, 13.00 and 14.00 – when the bus goes to pick up visitors at Reactor, because the last visit there ends at 14.30) free transfer will be organized (departure from Jamova cesta 39) to the Reactor Centre – Unit JSI in Podgorica, where visitors will be able (at 9.30, 10.30, 11.30, 12.30 and 13.30 – the last visit) to visit:
Visitors will first learn some basic information about the reactor. Then they will see a control room where the operator sits and operates a reactor with control rods. The tour of the reactor platform will follow. From there you can nicely see to the bottom of the reactor basin, where the core is located. In recent years, most of the experiments have been carried out on the platform, so there is also a lot of interesting experimental equipment there. The tour will be completed with “hot laboratories” visit. Not hot because of high temperatures, but because you could handle high radioactive materials there. The whole program will take about an hour.
In the educational centre for nuclear technology, visitors will be able to listen to a brief presentation of the operation of our nuclear power plant Krško. The presentation will be followed by a workshop on radioactivity, where visitors will be presented the characteristics of radioactive radiation and how to protect from it. All the time, even during individual guided tours, visitors will be able to see a permanent exhibition on nuclear technology. In case of a good weather, visitors will be able to play in the parking lot with thermal machines and will be presented some experiments related to the energy and operation of power plants. The program in the training centre will take approximately one hour.
Within the Department of Low and Medium Energy Physics at the Jožef Stefan Institute operates the Microanalytical Centre (MIC), located in Podgorica, where the largest Slovenian ion accelerator operates. The HVEE Tandetron accelerator is designed to produce high energy ion beams to change and analyse the ion beam in a research environment. It has the ability to produce a large number of highly stable ion beams with energy of hundreds keV to number of MeV. A part of environmental research is carried out on measurements and methods of nuclear physics. The collected samples are analysed using the method of proton excitation of x-rays, which was introduced in the 1980s at the Van de Graaff accelerator and today it takes place on the new accelerator Tandetron or with the X-ray fluorescence method. These two methods can simultaneously measure a number of elements that are traceable in trace samples. At MIC project of radioactivity control in the Nuclear Power Plant Krško surroundings and next to the research reactor TRIGA is being carried out.
During the Open Day, the visit of the accelerator will take place along with the visit of the Department of Environmental Sciences. Visitors will stay on each department for about half an hour.
The Department of Environmental Sciences operates at two locations, Jamova cesta 39 in Ljubljana and within the Reactor Centre Podgorica. The department covers a wide range of research activities that are diverse as the environment itself. Research focuses on the intertwining of reciprocal physical, chemical and biological processes that form our environment, and on human and his activities. The department surveys are carried out in several sections, such as Environmental Analytical Chemistry; Biological and Geochemical Cycles; Microbial System Ecology; Environment, Nutrition and Health; Environmental Technologies; Environmental Impact Assessment and Risk Assessment and Environmental Informatics. The department deals among other things with research on the impact of various chemicals on health, such as mercury, cadmium, lead, selenium, arsenic and a number of organic compounds that land on our plates. The department is also participating in the development of technical solutions for environmental problems and environmental management. Within the department operate the ISO-FOOD -ERA Chair for the quality, safety and traceability of foods using isotopic techniques, the infrastructural Centre for Mass Spectrometry and the ELMU – Ecological Laboratory with a Mobile Unit. The work at the department is interdisciplinary: research, which is based on natural sciences is in combination with social sciences attempted to be transferred into the legal order and practice.
During the Open Day, visit of the department will take place along with a tour of the Tandetron accelerator (each section will hold visitors for half an hour). In addition to the visit of the Department of Environmental Sciences laboratories, some interesting experiments will be prepared, where visitors will be able to participate and test their knowledge.
During the Open Day, visitors gather at the parking lot in front of the Nuclear Technology Training Centre (larger parking on the left side immediately behind the door porter). There will be panels at the parking lot, where the viewing programs will be marked, and in addition to the panels, there will also be coordinators who will accompany the visitors to individual programs.
To visit the Research Reactor TRIGA, you must fill in an application form and have a valid identity document (including children) with you (on the bus).
The departure of the last bus from the Reactor Centre towards Jamova is at 14.30.
