Description: The invention relates to a coating consisting essentially of titanium dioxide wherein at least 20 % of the titanium dioxide has a crystalline structure of anatase and/or rutile; the coating has a roughness comprising indentations, wherein at least 50 % of the indentations have a maximum depth of 1-50 nm and a maximum width of 1-50 nm; the coating is treatable to achieve a water contact angle of 0-20°; the coating is treatable to be negatively charged or positively charged; and the coating exhibits an improved attachment of mammalian tissue cells, which improved attachment is such that when a substrate coated with the above coating is compared to the same uncoated substrate, at least 100 % more cells remain attached on the coated substrate than on the uncoated substrate.
