Developing a new clean manufacturing process for ceramic pressure sensors
KEKO Equipment Ltd., an electronic equipment manufacturer from Slovenia, is a leader in the manufacture of machines for the production of multilayer passive ceramic components. The company is also a producer of LTCC materials and equipment for the production of multilayer ceramic components.
An innovative high-temperature ceramic pressure sensor based on LTCC technology for temperatures up to 250°C was developed within the project, Within this project we reached the very challenging goal of producing miniaturized pressure-sensors in a manufacturing process that enabled lower consumption of energy, required much less materials than the conventional ceramic pressure-sensors.
The results were reached through the cooperation with Jožef Stefan Institute, the Electronic Ceramic Department, Slovenia and Hahn-Schickard-Gesellschaft für angewandte Forschung e.V| Stuttgart, Germany. The Electronic Ceramic Department at the Jožef Stefan Institute under the leadership of prof. Barbara Malič, head of the department, developed an innovative high-temperature ceramic pressure sensor based on LTCC technology for temperatures up to 250°C.
Center for Technology Transfer and Innovation at the Jozef Stefan Institute liaised KEKO Equipment Ltd. with complementary technology centre Hahn-Schickard, supported the cooperation by assistance during the funding application phase, kick-off and execution of the project, preparing final project implementation report and the project’s success story. Center for Technology Transfer and Innovation is a partner in the KET4CleanProduction project that supported the cooperation between KEKO Equipment, Jožef Stefan Institute and the German partner financially and with the described assistance.

Lower Production Costs, Reduced Product Size and Environmentally Friendlier Production
Croatian company Bor plastika, which produces wastewater treatment plants, was looking to develop a new product that would enable them to increase sales while reducing production impacts on the environment. At the Jožef Stefan Institute’s Center for Technology and Innovation Transfer (CTT JSI), we connected the company with Slovenian and Portuguese researchers and helped with the successful application for the KET4CleanProduction pilot program grant. The result of the cooperation was the rapid development of new technology, which achieved the set goals and enabled the increase of the efficiency of the wastewater treatment plant, its physical reduction and the reduction of the impact of production on the environment.
What did Jožef Stefan Institute do for the company? Experts at the Department of Systems and Control (E-2) of the “Jožef Stefan” Institute under the leadership of dr. Nadje Hvala cooperated with the knowledge in the field of modeling the processes of wastewater treatment plants. Modeling is often used in this field, as wastewater treatment systems are complex and difficult to understand and optimally manage. With the help of modeling they determined how it is necessary to modify wastewater treatment plants production by the company Bor-plastika, in case they would introduce the so-called MBBR technology – Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor. In this case, small plastic carriers are introduced into the process reactors, to which bacteria that purify the wastewater are attached as a biofilm. Using modeling, different values were determined for MBBR technology and compared with established active sludge technology. Those parameters were final quality of treated wastewater, volume of individual reactors, operating conditions such as ventilation, sludge production, etc.
How did we at CTT JSI help? The cooperation was supported by the Center for Technology and Innovation Transfer at the Jožef Stefan Institute, which helped establish contact between the Croatian company and Portuguese and Slovenian researchers, prepare a joint project application and formulate and sign a cooperation agreement between all partners.
